Rubber
The rubber tree is scientifically known as Hevea brasiliensis and belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is commonly known as the Para rubber tree or Seringueira. The Indian Rubber Tree is a different species, scientifically known as Ficus elastica.
Sector Summary
- India’s natural rubber production increased by 2.1% in 2024–25, reaching an estimated 8.75 lakh tonnes, with the cultivated area expanding to 9.39 lakh hectares.
- Domestic rubber consumption remained strong at around 14.1 lakh tonnes, significantly exceeding production and driving continued import demand.
- Natural rubber imports rebounded to 5.51 lakh tonnes in 2024–25, increasing pressure on domestic prices and industry profitability.
